Meet Our Doctors

Dr. John W Rheney

Dr. John W. Rheney III was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and moved to Orangeburg at two months old when his parents, Dr. John W. Rheney Jr., MD, and Joyce Rheney, a nurse, established the first pediatric-only practice in Orangeburg. As the oldest of three siblings—Betsy, Bruce, and David—Dr. Rheney has lived in Orangeburg his entire life, aside from his academic years spent at Clemson University, where he graduated with honors with a B.S. in Zoology, and in Charleston, where he earned his DMD at MUSC School of Dentistry.

While at MUSC, Dr. Rheney III worked in the Graduate Research Center as an intern, researching the effects of Beta-Propranolol on heart muscle. He also gained practical experience in the Ambulatory Care Unit at Richland Memorial Hospital and completed rotations in the ER.

In 1981, Dr. Rheney III returned to Orangeburg with an uncertain path forward. After reaching out to local dentists and being advised they didn’t need assistance, he received a call from Don Collier, the president of First National Bank, who, along with Clarence Evans, facilitated the setup of his dental practice alongside Dr. Jimmy L. Gardner, DMD. Together, they opened a state-of-the-art dental facility across from what is now Orangeburg Prep School. As the area grew commercially, Dr. Rheney and Dr. Gardner eventually sold the property, and in 2000, Dr. Rheney moved his practice back to his roots on Cook Road.

Dr. Rheney III is married to Breta Ann Rheney, and together they have three daughters and six grandchildren. In his free time, he enjoys farming, hunting, fishing, and working on machinery—skills he finds akin to problem-solving dental challenges.

“I dearly love my staff and patients and am sometimes overwhelmed by the memories of those who have been with me for my 43 years of practice. It’s a blessing to now care for the grandchildren of patients who started with me all those years ago but are no longer here. Orangeburg has truly blessed me.” – Dr. John W. Rheney III
